Boxing World Champions – WBC, IBF, WBO, WBA

World Boxing News provides the official and updated list of every current Boxing World Champion across the four recognized sanctioning bodies — IBF, WBC, WBA, and WBO.

From the glamour of the heavyweight division down to the technical mastery of minimumweight, WBN compiles the only list that matters. Fighters who hold all four titles simultaneously are undisputed champions in the modern era.

As WBN makes clear, WBC Franchise and WBA regular titles are not considered world championship titles. Therefore, any ‘champions’ holding a title do not count.

This means only full world champions are listed, removing confusion caused by secondary belts that misrepresent a fighter’s status.

Recognized world boxing sanctioning bodies

World Boxing Council (WBC)

The World Boxing Council is an international boxing organization sanctioning events worldwide.

Founded in 1963 with 11 countries, the WBC has since expanded to 161. Mauricio Sulaimán has presided over the body since 2014, following the death of his father, José Sulaimán.

WBC Franchise and Emeritus champions are not world titleholders, while the WBC’s trophy belts remain one-off showpieces.

World Boxing Organization (WBO)

The WBO was founded in 1988 under its first President, Ramon Pina Acevedo. Initially, fans and media viewed only the WBA, IBF, and WBC as genuine world titles, leaving the WBO in a fight for recognition.

The sanctioning body eventually surpassed the IBO in the race to be considered the fourth world title. Champions such as Chris Eubank, Johnny Tapia, Prince Naseem Hamed, Ronald Wright, Joe Calzaghe, and Wladimir Klitschko cemented their place.

Until 2000, the IBO held more prestige, but the following decade saw the WBO firmly established. The WBO awards ‘Super’ champion status to fighters who defend their title five times, along with a WBO ring. Unlike the WBA, no additional belt is added to the division.

World Boxing Association (WBA)

The WBA began life in 1921 as the National Boxing Association (NBA) before rebranding during the 1960s and relocating its offices to Panama.

Throughout much of the 20th century, WBA titles were held in the highest regard until the WBC surpassed them in the 1970s. Since the 2000s, however, the WBA has faced criticism over rankings, the number of belts, and questionable judging.

World Boxing News declassified the WBA in January 2021 due to disillusionment with its policies, only reinstating recognition in October of that year after progress was made in reducing the number of belts. Since 2023, the sanctioning body has added new titles, prompting WBN to reconsider declassification.

BoxRec, a global boxing records database, dropped recognition of the WBA entirely in 2024.

International Boxing Federation (IBF)

The IBF launched in 1983 and quickly rose to prominence due to its transparency and fair rankings system.

For 25 years, the IBF was regarded as a straight shooter in championship rulings. However, by 2015, criticism began to grow around certain decisions.

A strict enforcer of mandatory defenses, the IBF has often been urged to show more flexibility instead of stripping champions at the first opportunity. Even so, it remains a central and respected part of the current boxing landscape.
