Beterbiev vs Bivol III: Boxing’s biggest trilogy falls apart

Boxing fans again are the ones who suffer as two superstars of the sport failed to sign on the dotted line for a third and final encounter.

Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol will go their separate ways despite both not getting any younger after two significant wars.

Both fights, the first won by Beterbiev in October 2024 and the second identically by Bivol in the rematch last February, were Fight of the Year contenders. And despite Turki Alalshikh’s involvement in the two battles, it seems the Saudi matchmaker’s superpowers failed on this occasion.

Known for making the fights the sport needs, Alalshikh is unable to get the pair back in the ring to finish the trilogy.

Beterbiev’s Frustration

Beterbiev has since lashed out at Dmitry Bivol for backing away from their planned trilogy showdown, confirming he will return to action on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The unified light-heavyweight champion vented his frustration in a direct statement after Bivol failed to engage, despite what Beterbiev described as “almost impossible to refuse” terms.

“Our next fight was supposed to take place in Russia. You know what we’re talking about now. The third fight with Bivol,” said Beterbiev.

“We were offered great conditions, which were almost impossible to refuse. For my part, I did everything to make the third fight happen, but my opponent chose the path of retreat again.”

The 40-year-old puncher added: “I’ve waited long enough, and I don’t intend to wait any longer. Sitting around doing nothing while someone else is resting is too much.

“See you on November 22 in Riyadh. I’m continuing my journey, no matter what.”

Beterbiev collapse Bivol

The Trilogy Collapses

Beterbiev and Bivol had plans to trade blows in their native Russia, potentially in early 2026, after taking a break. However, Beterbiev’s latest comments suggest the talks may have collapsed for good.

Bivol has yet to respond to World Boxing News seeking an update, though the pressure is mounting for the three-belt light heavyweight titleholder to clarify his stance.

Meanwhile, Beterbiev will now face Deon Nicholson in Saudi Arabia to remain active while the long-anticipated third Bivol installment drags on.

In a disappointing twist to the entire saga, Beterbiev shares a bill with David Benavidez, with Alalshikh unfathomably keeping them apart despite the opportunity to make another eye-catching contest.

As Beterbiev prepares to return in 2025, Bivol is yet to emerge from the shadows.
